Documentary Film “Only Those in Love Will Survive. Traian Popovici and Others” Presented in Romania

In Iași, within the framework of the project “Multiculturalism in Cinema” and at the invitation of the Iași branch of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania, a screening of the updated version of the documentary film “Only Those in Love Will Survive. Traian Popovici and Others” took place. The presentation was followed by an active and engaged discussion with the audience.

The film was originally produced in 2022 as part of the cultural and educational project of the Public Resources and Initiatives Charity Foundation titled “Local History Through the Stories of Symbolic Figures: The Mayor of Chernivtsi – Righteous Among the Nations”, with the support of the Romanian Agency for International Development Cooperation (RoAid) and the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine. Throughout 2023, the film was expanded with new historical facts and expert commentary.

The documentary is centered on the story of Traian Popovici, who, by a coincidence of history, became mayor of Chernivtsi during one of the most tragic periods in the city’s past (1941–1942). During this time, he saved the lives of thousands of Jewish residents of Chernivtsi. In 1969, he was awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations in Israel, with the wording: “In special gratitude for saving twenty thousand Chernivtsi Jews from deportation to the death camps in Transnistria.”

In addition to Popovici’s story, the film presents the experiences of Chernivtsi residents during World War II and explores a deeper reflection on why, in times of war, the most important word is “love,” and why stories of rescue and humanity matter more than narratives of violence and killing.
