Short Video Story Competition "Medical Reform: To Live or Die?"

June – July 2017: Participation in the Short Video Story Competition "Medical Reform: To Live or Die?"

This competition was conducted as part of the "StoryMaker: School of Citizen Journalism" project in partnership with:

  • NGO "Initiative for Democratic Development"
  • All-Ukrainian Council for the Protection of Patients' Rights and Safety
  • Open University for Adults

The competition was financially supported by GPD Charitable Trust.

Overview

Through the StoryMaker initiative, students, activists, citizen journalists, and professional journalists from across Ukraine submitted 53 original video stories, showcasing how citizens experience the impact of healthcare and medical reforms.

Jury Panel

A professional jury evaluated the competition entries. Members included:

  • Olha Skrypnyk – Journalist at Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, editor, screenwriter, healthcare expert, lecturer in television journalism with 15+ years of experience, and a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.
  • Kostyantyn Nadutyi – Board Member of the Ukrainian Association of Family Medicine, Deputy Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Medical Society, and healthcare management expert with 10+ years of experience.
  • Olha Skorina – Expert in medical law, Head of the Legal Service at the All-Ukrainian Council for the Protection of Patients' Rights and Safety.

Evaluation Criteria

The jury assessed the competition entries based on:

  1. Balanced coverage of multiple perspectives
  2. Original content
  3. Depth of thematic exploration
  4. Quality of execution and storytelling

Competition Winners

Citizen Journalists Category

  • 1st Place: "Quality of Life Index" – Arkadii Sotnyk (Kyiv)
  • 2nd Place: "Born to Live" – Nadiya Shehda and Ruslan Veselyi (Ivano-Frankivsk)
  • 3rd Place (tie):
    • "Red Cross: To Be or Not to Be?" – Kateryna Chumak (Zhytomyr)

    • "Medicine in Chudniv Style" – Svitlana Pakholchuk and Kateryna Chumak (Chudniv)

Professional Journalists Category

The jury awarded only one entry:

  • 1st Place: "Medical Workers' Day: The Reality of 'White Coats' in Chernihiv Villages" – Pavlo Solodovnyk, journalist for Cheline Internet TV.

Significance and Impact

The competition provided a platform for citizen and professional journalists to shed light on pressing healthcare issues. It fostered public awareness and engagement with Ukraine's medical reforms, highlighting real-life experiences and challenges in the healthcare sector.
