2nd Drawing Contest on Anti-Alcohol Themes Among Schoolchildren in Chernivtsi (February – April 2013)
The project was implemented in partnership with the Department of Education of the Chernivtsi City Council.
The goal of the project was to promote a healthy lifestyle among children and youth in Chernivtsi, to encourage them to create visual materials advocating for abstinence from alcohol, to raise awareness about alcohol prevention, to support students’ creative abilities, and to foster the education of youth in the spirit of healthy living while highlighting their achievements in public and community life.
The idea for the project arose from the alarming situation in Ukraine regarding child and adolescent alcoholism. According to WHO data from 2008, Ukraine ranked first in the world for alcohol consumption among children and youth: 40% of children aged 14 to 18 were already engaged in regular alcohol use. A UNICEF study conducted among students across all regions of Ukraine found that 25% of 15-16-year-olds had consumed alcohol before the age of 13. Among surveyed children aged 11–12, this figure was 40%. The age at which youth begin drinking and smoking continues to decline, with a growing number of girls involved.
A total of 77 artworks were submitted to the contest by students from grades 1–11 of general secondary schools and extracurricular educational institutions. The Expert Jury selected six winning entries.
In the younger age category, 1st place went to Anastasiia Terletska, 2nd place to Danylo Tkakishchak, and 3rd place to Nicole Struts.
In the older age category, 1st place went to Anastasiia Hrykolovska, 2nd place to Anzhelika Katsel, and 3rd place to Aliona Katsel.
Encouragement prizes were also awarded to five art teachers whose students won in the competition.
The project helped draw widespread public attention to issues of children’s and youth health, the spread of child alcoholism, and other harmful habits. Talented youth were identified and supported, and their achievements presented to the broader public.
